In 2002, Chevrolet introduced a vehicle that was completely unique: the Avalanche. The Avalanche combined the passenger capacity of an SUV and the utility of a pickup truck. The 2002 Avalanche came in two different sizes -- 1500 and 2500 -- both of which came equipped with two- or four-wheel-drive systems. The Avalanche 1500 came with a 285-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8 engine, and the 2500 series came with a 340-horsepower, 8.1-liter V-8. Despite its unorthodox design, the taillight assembly on the rear of the Avalanche requires a fairly basic replacement procedure.

Instructions

    1

Open the Avalanche's tailgate and locate the two taillight assembly retaining screws located inside the tailgate jamb. Remove the two screws, using a Phillips screwdriver, and pull the taillight assembly from the vehicle.

    2

Label the three sockets plugging into the rear of the taillight assembly, using masking tape and a permanent marker. This will help you install the sockets in the correct position when reinstalling the taillight assembly.

    3

Press the locking tab on each bulb socket and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull each socket and bulb from the taillight assembly.

    4

Insert the sockets into their respective holes on the new taillight assembly, using the labels as a guide. Twist each socket clockwise until the locking tab to clicks into place.

    5

Set the taillight assembly on the rear of the Avalanche and tighten the two taillight assembly-retaining screws, using a Phillips screwdriver. Close the tailgate.
