Reattaching a rearview mirror is a relatively simple task that requires only patience, attention to detail and specialized, inexpensive adhesive that is available at most auto-supply stores. The windshield must be properly prepared prior to installation of the rearview mirror, but if you are prepared to expend a little elbow grease, this do-it-yourself job can save you a good deal of money.

Instructions

    1

Disassemble the rearview mirror by loosening the screw (with an Allen wrench) that holds the mirror stem to the mounting bracket. Slide the stem from the bracket. Use a razor-type paint scraper to remove any residual adhesive from the mounting bracket. Before removing the residual glue from the windshield, use a china marker to mark above and below the position where the mounting bracket was attached. Scrape residual adhesive from the windshield, being careful to preserve the reference marks.

    2

Apply adhesive from the mirror-reattachment kit to the mounting bracket, per the manufacturer's instructions. Place the mounting bracket in place on the windshield. Be very careful to position the bracket right-side up. Use two pieces of masking tape, each about a foot long, to secure the bracket to the windshield in an "X" shape. With the bracket supported by the masking tape, allow the adhesive to dry according to instructions.

    3

Slide the mirror stem onto the mounting bracket. Using an Allen wrench, tighten the screw that secures the mirror to the mounting bracket. While seated in the driver's seat, adjust the position of the mirror to best visualize objects behind the vehicle.
