Without the water pump in the Ford Probe, the coolant cannot flow through the engine properly, so when you first realize that the water pump is bad, you need to replace it. For instance, if you notice a significant amount of fluid draining from the weep hole on the water pump, you need to replace it. If the bearing is bad in the water pump, you will generally hear a squealing sound coming from it when the engine is running. It will take about an hour and a half to replace the water pump on the Ford Probe.

Instructions

    1

Make sure the engine is completely cool on the car. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. Place a drain pan under the radiator and open the valve with a wrench to drain the engine coolant.

    2

Remove the timing belt covers using a ratchet and socket. Mark the exact position and direction of the timing belt using the marking crayon. The belt must go back exactly the way it came off.

    3

Disconnect the coolant inlet pipe using a wrench. Remove the pulley from the water pump with a wrench. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and pull the pump away from the engine.

    4

Place a new gasket and water pump on the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Install the pulley on the water pump and tighten the bolts with a wrench.

    5

Place the gasket between the water pump and the water inlet pipe and secure the pipe by tightening the bolts with a wrench. Install the timing belt according to the marks you made when removing it.

    6

Install the timing belt cover and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Make sure the drain valve on the bottom of the radiator is closed. Refill the radiator and coolant reservoir with engine coolant. Connect the battery cable and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the car and check for leaks.
