If a four barrel carburetor, or any carburetor for that matter, gets too clogged with sludge and varnish to be adjusted, or the engine begins to perform poorly due to an internal leak in the carburetor, it is time to rebuild the carburetor. Rebuilding the carburetor requires the technician to disassemble the device, clean the parts, and reassemble the carburetor. It's important to keep track of all the parts. You can obtain a carburetor rebuild kit for your four barrel carburetor at your local auto-parts store.

Instructions

    1

Remove the four barrel carburetor from the engine using any tools required. Refer to the vehicle manufacturer's repair manual for the exact steps required to remove the carburetor.

    2

Disassemble the carburetor in the order prescribed in the vehicle manufacturer's repair manual. Place all metal parts in a parts basket as the carburetor is being disassembled.

    3

Immerse the parts basket in the carburetor cleaner by removing the cover of the bucket of carburetor cleaner, grasping the bucket-style handle on the basket and lowering the basket into the carburetor cleaner, ensuring that you do not splash any of the fluid. Replace the cover and allow the parts to soak in the carburetor cleaner for at least 30-minutes.

    4

Place the bucket of carburetor cleaner close to a drain. Remove the top from the bucket and remove the parts basket by grasping the handle and pulling it out of the bucket.. Allow as much carburetor cleaner to drain back into the bucket as possible.

    5

Rinse the carburetor cleaner off all parts thoroughly by using a garden hose attached to a water source. Blow-dry all parts individually by using an air chuck attached to an air hose and an air compressor.

    6

Reassemble the carburetor using new parts and gaskets from the appropriate carburetor overhaul kit. Refer to the manufacturer's repair manual and the directions in the kit for instructions on how to reassemble the carburetor. Make the prescribed adjustments to the floats, jets and linkages that the manufacturer requires as you reassemble the four barrel carburetor.

    7

Reinstall the carburetor onto the intake manifold and reattach all linkages, hoses, lines or other parts that are required to be connected to the carburetor for proper operation of the engine per instructions in the manufacturer's repair manual. Start the engine and adjust the carburetor jets and idle speed following the instructions in the manufacturer's repair manual.

    8

Test-drive the vehicle to ensure that the problem that initiated the carburetor overhaul has been remedied, completing the rebuilding of the four barrel carburetor.
