The radiator cooling fan in your 1992 Chevy Astro mounts against the front of the engine attached to your water pump. Since your Astro's accessory belts drive the fan, you usually have to remove the fan to repair other engine components. Damage to the fan often occurs from a bent or cracked fan blade. This causes the fan to operate in an unbalanced mode that can lead to other engine problems. But straightening a bent fan blade is not an option. You must remove and replace the engine fan in your 1992 Chevy Astro. With a few tools, you can perform the job yourself at home in 40 to 45 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Raise and properly support the hood on your 1992 Chevy Astro. Loosen the negative terminal's bolt on your battery with a socket wrench and lift the cable away from its post. Move the cable away from your Astro's battery and place a shop rag over the negative post on the battery.

    2

Locate your engine fan's four securing bolts. Stand to either side of the engine and peer behind the fan. You should see the heads of all four bolts protruding from the face of the water pump pulley.

    3

Remove three of the bolts holding your Astro's engine fan in place with an adjustable wrench. Hold the fan in place by supporting the clutch and remove the fourth and final securing bolt with your adjustable wrench. The clutch is the disk-shaped component connected to the front of your engine fan.

    4

Lift your Astro's engine fan away from the water pump pulley and set it clutch-side down on a flat working area. Remove the four bolts that you see securing the fan to the clutch with your socket wrench. Lift the defective engine fan away from the clutch and discard it. Reverse the removal process to install a new engine fan in your 1992 Chevy Astro.
