How to Install Windshield Sealant

Installing the sealant is one of the most important parts of replacing a windshield. Doing this repair yourself can save you a fair amount of time and money. If you have a crack in your windshield, you need to replace it for safety reasons as well as to avoid a fix-it ticket from the highway patrol. Commercial-grade silicone sealant is recommended because it has a low amount of elasticity.

Instructions

    1

Remove the windshield and molding with a screwdriver.

    2

Cut away any remaining sealant on the windshield frame so you can apply the new sealant easily. If the original sealant is silicone-based, you can leave a thin layer on the frame. This makes it easier for the new sealant to adhere to the frame.

    3

Cut off the tip of the sealant container and place a small bead of sealant on the frame. Place another small bead under the gasket lip, between the gasket and the metal or glass. Press the gasket flap lightly into the sealant.

    4

Remove any sealant that gets on the paint or window with rubbing alcohol. Let the sealant cure for at least 48 hours before driving the car. While it's curing, keep it out of direct sunlight and rain by covering it with a tarp.
