As vehicles age, parts get older and start to break down. The rubber seals around the window and in the door jams are typically the first to go, as they get brittle with age and deteriorate quickly. Replacing these seals isn't a difficult task, but it can be a bit tricky if you've never done it before. In this case, the vehicle is a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Instructions

    1

Open the door and roll down the window all the way. You want the window to be as out of the way as possible, to give you lots of working room.

    2

Unbolt the rear view mirror using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set. Place it to the side. Depending on the model of truck that you own, you may have to unplug a harness for the power mirrors using your hands, and pull off a decorative piece of trim using your hands as well.

    3

Step outside of the vehicle and place your hands on the bottom ledge of the window, and then pull up on the seal. This will remove the edge seal of the window; place it to the side. Pull off the remaining window trim on the door, by pulling down on it and working your way around the window.

    4

Place the rear section of the new window rubber (the section closest to the back window). Push it down into the window channel to set it in place. Work the window rubber around the window, following the curves of the truck, until you push the last half into the forward window channel. The rubber will have curves in it to match the curves of the opening; use that as a guide.

    5

Clip the replacement window channel in place on the window sill by pressing down on it, clipping it in place. Then reinstall the mirror using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set. Roll up the window to check for proper operation.
