Window cranks are similar on most vehicles, including 1997 Pontiacs. Removing the window handle is the first step in removing the door panels, which is necessary should you have to replace a speaker or fix the window regulator. These handles are held in place by a clip; the fastest and easiest way to remove them is with a special tool available at most auto parts stores. Although the process can be a bit frustrating, it's not technically difficult to perform and can be done in under 10 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Open the door for the window handle you want to remove. Push the door panel in towards the exterior door to reveal the clip underneath the window crank. This clip is shaped like a "U," and it needs to be pushed off of the window handle to access the piece.

    2

Slide the window crank removal tool behind the door handle, making sure the "U" shape on the handle is directed towards the "U" shape on the clip. Push the clip off of the window handle using the tool. The clip is under tension so be careful where it shoots off to avoid getting hit or losing the clip.

    3

Pull the handle straight off of the window regulator.
