Hybrid owners may get free parking in Ferndale

While the savings won't be all that great, it could be just another small measure of how much America wants to move away from foreign oil dependence. And just one more perk for hybrid drivers.

City may offer free parking for hybrid vehicles

FERNDALE — It's no secret hybrid and electric cars save money for their drivers on the road, but they may soon save money even when they are parked — at least in Ferndale.

Councilman Craig Covey is touting a measure to allow free parking at city parking meters for hybrid cars. The savings would equal 50 cents an hour.

"I'd like to do it for a one-year trial period," Covey said. "If you drive a hybrid or electric car you don't have to feed the meters."

Such a move will encourage people to pursue "greener cars and less dependence on foreign oil," he said.
