Sounding like Nissan's Carlos Ghosn when talking about hybrids, Toyota Execs believe diesel engines are too expensive to build and sell.
"I won’t deny that we won’t be offering a diesel in the US sometime in the future," said Executive Vice President Masatami Takimoto, who oversees Toyota’s research and development. "But right now we think hybrids are much more cost competitive," he told reporters on the sidelines at the Detroit Auto Show.
Nissan has been saying the same thing about hybrids and for probably the same reasons. Without paying for the research and development and attempting to bring the costs down, diesel engines would not likely be profitable for Toyota.
