The 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid was certified by the IRS as a qualified hybrid motor vehicle and is eligible for the federal tax credit to those who buy it in the coming year. The credit is set at $2,350 for those who are eligible.

The full credit is available until the car maker (in this case, Nissan) sells 60,000 eligible vehicles. In the case of Nissan, that won't likely occur for a long time, given that the Altima hybrid is the first vehicle to qualify.

The likelihood of the Altima HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) not qualifying was low, given that it is built using Toyotas Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Nissan is being 'cautious' in its approach to hybrids. The Altima HEV will only be available for sale in eight states (those with the strictest emissions requirements).
