Holden will offer a hybrid version of it's Commodore within the next two years. The new hybrid would cost around 15 percent more than a standard version of the car. It's unclear whether the Commodore will come as a full or mild hybrid.
Holden and Toyota are looking for incentives from the Australian government to help sell hybrid technology which costs more than standard vehicle powertrains.
"Hybrids still don't make economic sense unless they have significant incentives," General Motors Asia-Pacific boss Nick Reilly said.
"We've just put our submission in to the Government on the car industry, and we've said they should offer consumer incentives for green cars."
Reilly said they are also considering a turbo-diesel Commodore as well as a turbo-charged four cylinder version. It's unclear which will arrive first.
"It's more a matter of 'How long does the engineering take?' rather than whether hybrid is more important than diesel," he said.
Holden, a part of GM, is located in Australia.
