The air cleaner on a Murray lawn mower must be kept clean to prevent a rich fuel mixture through reduced airflow, as this will foul the spark plug quickly. To prevent this condition, change the air cleaner frequently. The air filter is a spongy material and must be handled with care because it tears easily. Keeping the air filter clean will extend the service life of the oil. A rich mixture due to a dirty air filter will cause unburned fuel to contaminate the oil due to blow-by past the piston rings.

Instructions

    1

Locate the air cleaner housing on the side of the mower. Remove the center bolt, using a screwdriver. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the bolt straight out and lay it aside.

    2

Pull the top cover off the housing. Remove the green sponge air filter from the housing.

    3

Wash the air filter in warm, soapy water. Squeeze the water from the air filter and lay it in the sun to dry.

    4

Place the air filter in the filter housing and install the cap and through-bolt. Tighten the center bolt snugly by turning it clockwise.
