The air cleaner on a Murray lawn mower must be kept clean to prevent a rich fuel mixture through reduced airflow, as this will foul the spark plug quickly. To prevent this condition, change the air cleaner frequently. The air filter is a spongy material and must be handled with care because it tears easily. Keeping the air filter clean will extend the service life of the oil. A rich mixture due to a dirty air filter will cause unburned fuel to contaminate the oil due to blow-by past the piston rings.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the air cleaner housing on the side of the mower. Remove the center bolt, using a screwdriver. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the bolt straight out and lay it aside.
2Pull the top cover off the housing. Remove the green sponge air filter from the housing.
3Wash the air filter in warm, soapy water. Squeeze the water from the air filter and lay it in the sun to dry.
4Place the air filter in the filter housing and install the cap and through-bolt. Tighten the center bolt snugly by turning it clockwise.
