The coil-on-plug ignition system is a major recent addition to automotive ignition systems. This system, which is common on post-2000 Fords, uses a single coil pack on top of each spark plug. This allows each plug to receive the optimum spark, without loss due to resistance in ignition wires. All but one of the engines available in the 2001 F-150 came standard with a coil-on-plug ignition system only the 4.2-liter V-6 did not have it. Replacing a coil pack on the F-150 is a straightforward task that most F-150 owners can complete.

Instructions

    1

Locate the eight coil packs four on each side of the top of the engine, just to the inside of the valve covers.

    2

Press and hold the unlocking button on a coil packs wiring harness, and pull the harness from the coil pack. Press and hold the locking button on the fuel injector wiring harness covering the coil pack retaining bolt, and pull the wiring harness from the fuel injector.

    3

Remove the coil pack retaining bolt with a ratchet and socket. Pull the coil pack upward with a slight wiggling motion to remove it from the engine.

    4

Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the rubber boot on the base of the new coil pack. Spread this grease around the inside of the boot with a small flat-head screwdriver.

    5

Line the coil pack boot up with the top of the spark plug and press the coil pack onto the spark plug until you feel it click into place. Hand-tighten the coil pack retaining bolt, then torque it from 5 to 6 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on top of the coil pack. Plug the wiring harness back into the receptacle on the fuel injector.

    6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 for any remaining coil packs that need replacing.
