How to Replace a Gas Tank Fuel Filler Pipe Neck on a 1997 Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger name was originally used as a trim level name for the Ford F-series trucks. The Ford Ranger was introduced as its own model, a compact pickup truck, in 1982. The 1997 Ford Ranger came equipped with a 2.3-liter in-line four-cylinder engine in the base model. A 3.0-liter V-6 and 4.0-liter V-6 were both options. The fuel filler tube and vapor tubes on the 1997 Ranger are both attached to the fuel filler neck at the top. The bottom of the tubes are connected to rubber hoses that attach to the fuel tank.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood on the Ranger and set the hood prop. Wrap a screwdriver tip in a rag. Open the Schrader valve cap on the top of the fuel rail. Insert the wrapped screwdriver tip into the Schrader valve and depress the pin. Allow the fuel to soak into the rag. Install the cap onto the Schrader valve when you are finished relieving the fuel pressure.

    2

Raise the rear of the Ranger with a floor jack on the differential. Place a jack stand beneath each side of the axle housing. Lower the truck onto the jack stands.

    3

Lie beneath the truck on the driver's side, just in front of the rear wheel. Slide your body into position to access the fuel filler neck. Disconnect the hose clamps from the fuel filler neck and the fuel vapor tube using a ratchet and socket.

    4

Remove the rubber tubes that extend from the fuel tank to the fuel filler neck and vapor tube. Slide out from beneath the truck and position yourself at the fuel filler door.

    5

Open the fuel filler door and remove the fill cap. Remove the filler neck bolts from the top of the filler neck with a ratchet, socket and extension. Pull the fuel filler neck upward and remove the filler neck and vapor tube from the truck completely.

    6

Install the new fuel filler tube and vapor tube assembly into the mounting hole. Install the filler neck mounting bolts and tighten them snug using a ratchet, socket and extension. Install the fuel cap onto the new filler neck.

    7

Lie next to the driver's side of the truck and position yourself to access the bottom of the filler tube and vapor tube by the rear wheel. Install the rubber hoses that extend from the fuel tank onto the fuel filler tube and vapor tube. Tighten the hose clamps snug with a ratchet and socket.

    8

Raise the truck off of the jack stands, and remove the stands from beneath the truck. Lower the Ranger to the ground slowly.
