Mustangs have roared down America's roads since April 17, 1964. While the styling has changed repeatedly over the years, the three-tiered taillight assembly has been a signature design feature since day one and remains so as of this writing. However, not all the design cues mean much if the functionality behind them doesn't work. The taillights house the rear turn signals and if the turn signal lever is faulty, the rear turn signals won't work. The turn signal lever is part of the Mustang's multifunction switch, in order to replace a faulty lever you must replace the entire assembly.

Instructions

    1

Sit in the Mustang's driver's seat. Pry the clamshell off the top of the steering column using a trim tool. The clamshell is the semi-circular trim piece that covers the steering column between the steering wheel and dashboard; the clamshell connections are located on either side of the column.

    2

Remove the clamshell and set it aside to expose the multifunction switch. Unplug the wiring pigtail from the switch body.

    3

Remove the screw holding the multifunction switch to the Mustang's steering column using a Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Lift the old switch assembly out of the column and set it aside. Place the new switch in the column, occupying the same space and orientation as the old one.

    5

Thread the retaining screw in by hand and then tighten it with a Phillips screwdriver. Plug the wiring pigtail into the new switch. Hold the clamshell in position and snap it back together by hand.
