ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles, are built to handle any off-road condition. This can cause damage and rust to the frame. Because frames are quite durable, a fresh coat of paint will get the ATV back to its orginal state. Repainting an ATV frame, once the machine has been disassembled, can also be a way to customize the quad with your personal choice of color. Whatever the reason for repainting an ATV frame, you can make the frame look new again without paying high costs to a painting specialist.
Instructions
- 1
Clean the surface of the ATV's frame with soap and water. With a lint-free towel, apply a wax and grease remover to the entire surface of the frame. Rinse the frame with water.
2Lay a drop cloth on a flat surface. Cover any items in the vicinity to avoid damage from overspray. On the drop cloth, put the ATV frame on jack stands.
3Prep the frame surface with 400- to 600-grit sandpaper. Remove the previous gloss finish and smooth the surface. Clean the sanding dust off the frame.
4Apply a primer spray paint to the ATV frame. Allow the primer to dry for approximately 10 minutes. Apply a second coat of primer spray paint.
5Apply two or more coats of the colored spray paint, depending on the color you are trying to achieve. Allow the paint to dry 10 minutes between each coat, then wait approximately 1 hour after you finished painting.
6Spray the clear coat on the frame. Allow the clear coat to dry for approximately 10 minutes. Apply a second coat of clear coat.
