The wiper blade dates back to Mary Andersons invention of the hand-operated windscreen wiper in 1905. Though the technology has changed drastically in the decades since the wipers invention, the basic idea remains the same: A rubber squeegee, attached to an arm, wipes water from the windshield. The 1994 S-10, just as most modern vehicles, came with two wiper arms. When removing these arms, it is important to make a reference mark to ease the alignment procedure upon installation.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Place a strip of painters masking tape on the windshield under the spot where the wiper blades rubber part contacts the windshield. Draw a reference line onto the tape where the wiper blade sets. This helps you realign the wiper arm.
2Trace the wiper arm until you reach the end closest to the front windshield cowl. Pull upward on the plastic cover located on the end of the wiper arm, exposing the retaining nut below it. Remove this retaining nut with a ratchet and socket, while holding the wiper arm still, by hand.
3Pull the wiper arm upward with a slight wiggling motion to remove it from the wiper linkage output shaft and off the S-10.
4Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to remove the other wiper arm.
Transferring the Wiper Blade
- 5
Press and hold the locking button on the wiper blade-retaining clip in the center of the wiper blade frame, and pull the wiper blade toward the open end of the wiper arm hook.
6Line up the wiper blade-retaining clip with the open side of the new wiper arms hook, with the curved part of the clip facing the hook.
7Slide the wiper blade toward the wiper arm hook until the retaining clip clicks into place.
8Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to transfer the blade to the other wiper arm.
Installation
- 9
Set the wiper arm on the wiper linkage output shaft loosely and line up the wiper blade with the reference mark made on the masking tape. There is a slight tolerance, so as long as the blade is within a -inch of the reference mark, it is okay.
10Press the wiper arm downward onto the wiper linkage output shaft until it seats onto the shaft. You may need to pivot the arm up or down slightly to line up the splines on the output shaft with the spines on the wiper arm.
11Hand-tighten the wiper arm-retaining nut, then tighten it to 17 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket while holding the wiper arm still.
12Pivot the cover on the end of the wiper arm downward and press it in place over the wiper arm-retaining nut until is snaps into place. Remove the painters masking tape from the windshield wiper.
13Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to install the other wiper arm.
