The base engine for the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro was a 3.8-liter V-6 with sequential fuel injection. The engine has an injector for each cylinder. The Camaro has three oxygen sensors, one in each exhaust manifold, and one behind the catalytic converter. The oxygen sensors monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and send a signal to the engine control module. The module uses the signal to adjust the fuel mixture.

Instructions

    1

Warm the engine up for a couple of minutes to aid in removing the oxygen sensor(s). The sensors are very hard to remove from a cold engine. Raise the front of the Camaro with a jack and support with jack stands. Use caution while working around warm engine parts.

    2

Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector. Pull the harness clip from the engine. The exhaust manifold sensor clips push into brackets at the rear of the cylinder heads. Disconnect the connector for the catalytic converter sensor and remove the lead from any clips it is secured to.

    3

Remove the sensor with a ratchet and special oxygen sensor socket. The socket has a notch in it for the sensor lead.

    4

Install a new sensor. Torque the sensor to 31 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and the sensor socket. Plug in the connector. Attach the clips.

    5

Raise the front of the Camaro. Remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground.
