How to Number Your V8 Plugs

If you have to remove the plugs when working on your V-8 engine, you should always number the plug wires so that you put them back on in the proper order. If you do not, the firing order will be off, and the vehicle will run poorly -- if it starts at all. Each make and model has its own firing order, though firing orders may be the same on more than one. You can number the plugs and wires in any order, as long as they go back on in the proper place.

Instructions

    1

Remember the layout of the block. If you are going to number the first cylinder on the driver's side "1," number them in order up the driver's side --- 1, 2, 3, 4. The passenger side should follow the same configuration --- 5 would be the cylinder closest to the radiator or front of the vehicle, then 6, 7 and 8.

    2

Write the number "1" on the spark plug wire attached to the spark plug in the hole you deemed was number 1, on the top of the wire where it is attached to the plug. Follow the wire up to the distributor and write a "1" on the top of the wire at the distributor, and on that wire's distributor tower. Remove the wire.

    3

Repeat the process for each plug wire. The spark plugs do not need to be numbered --- it is the wires that are important. Check the spark plugs to ensure that they do not need to be replaced, if you are not doing a tune up.
