The Volkswagen began as a brainchild of Adolf Hitler, which Ferdinand Porsche later turned into a reality with the production of the V1. The 2002 Jetta was a long ways from VWs humble roots, as it came standard with features that neither Hitler nor Porsche could have imagined. One of these features was the Jettas standard eight-speaker, AM-FM stereo system with a cassette player. Replacing the 2002 Jettas radio requires a special tool, but the process is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

Removing and Installing the Radio

    1

Find your radios security code, the four-digit code provided when the vehicle was new. If you are replacing the radio with a new or used unit, that radio should have come with a registration card that has this code. If you do not have this code, see the dealership to obtain a new code prior to removing the radio.

    2

Look on the radios face and find the two vertical slots one to the left of the Scan button and one to the right of the Seek button.

    3

Insert the radio removal keys (Volkswagen tool No. 3316) into the two slots until you hear them click into place. Pull the tools outward from the dashboard to slide the radio from its chassis.

    4

Pull the radio from its chassis just far enough to access the wiring on the rear of it. Press and hold the unlocking button on each wiring harness on the rear of the radio the number of harnesses depends on the Jettas options and pull each harness from the radio. Pull the antenna cable from the rear of the radio.

    5

Press downward on the locking tabs on the side of the radio, and pull the radio removal keys (Volkswagen tool No. 3316) from the radio.

    6

Plug the wiring harness(es) into the rear of the radio, and press the antenna cable into its receptacle on the back of the radio.

    7

Slide the radio into its chassis in the dashboard until you hear the locking tabs click into place.

Entering the Security Code

    8

Turn the Jettas ignition to the Run position and turn the radio on. Observe as Safe displays on the radios screen, the 1000 about 3 seconds later.

    9

Press and release preset button 1 until the first digit on the radios display matches the first digit in the radios security code. Repeat this step using preset buttons 2, 3, and 4 to set the corresponding digit in the radios security code.

    10

Hold the Seek button until you hear a beep, which indicates the radio is unlocked.

    11

Drive the Jetta to a local dealership to have the radio conformed to your Jetta's audio system. This process requires a special computer and training, so only professionals should perform it.
