The 2005 Volvo V70 comes equipped with a tail light lens on both rear sides of the car. The tail light lens houses the tail lights and the turn signal lights. When the lights are turned on, the tail lights automatically illuminate. The tail light lens must be replaced from inside of the car on each side of the rear cargo door hatch. The entire tail light assembly is held in place by screws on each side of the tail light lens.

Instructions

    1

Park the Volvo V70 on a flat surface and turn the engine off. Turn the lights on, then walk to the rear of the vehicle and make note of the top tail light lens. The tail light lens on the 2005 model Volvo V70 is the top lens. The top lens houses the tail light and the turn signal light. The bottom lens that is attached to the top lens houses the brake lights, reverse lights and the fog lights. The top lens is long and has a pointed top. The bottom lens is square and it is significantly shorter than the top lens. Turn the lights back off.

    2

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery post with a ratchet and a socket to prevent any electrical shock while working around the tail light assembly.

    3

Open the cargo door on the rear of the vehicle. Climb inside of the cargo area in the back of the vehicle, if necessary. Locate the tail light assemblies on the driver's side and passenger's sides, on the rear of the car. The back of each tail light assembly is located on each side of the cargo door. If the tail light assembly has a panel in the cargo area, remove the panel by unscrewing the plastic nuts with your fingers.

    4

Reach inside the back of the tail light assembly and pull back the fabric to access the rear portion of the tail light assembly. Unplug the wiring harness from the back side of the tail light assembly.

    5

Loosen and remove the rear mounting nuts from the top and bottom of the tail light assembly with a ratchet and a socket. Loosen and remove the small mounting screws from each side of the tail light assembly with a screwdriver.

    6

Pull out on the lamp socket assembly with your hands and place it in a safe area. The lamp socket assembly will have the tail light bulb and the turn signal bulb plugged into the assembly. Pull the gasket out from around the rear of the tail light lens and place it in a safe area.

    7

Step back outside the car and push outward on the tail light lens with one hand from the inside of the cargo area while catching the tail light lens with the other hand on the outside of the car. Remove the other tail light lens by following the same directions.

    8

Install the new tail light lens, lens gasket, lamp assembly and the wiring harness plug by reversing the steps outlined above. Replace any bulbs, as needed, before re-installing the assembly.

    9

Reattach the negative battery cable to the negative battery post. Tighten the battery cable down tight with the ratchet and socket. Close the hood. Turn on the lights to test the rear lights for proper operation.
