CV & Shaft Removal Tools

Automobile movement relies on a transfer of power from the engine and transmission to the individual wheels. However, the drive axles that hold the wheels can deteriorate over time, requiring removal of the CV and shaft.

Identification

The drive axle, or shaft, holds the vehicle's wheels at each end. Each axle end has a constant-velocity (CV) joint, allowing turning movement while driving. Removing the CV joint and shaft involves basic hand tools, as well as two specialized tools.

Specialized Tools

Purchase or borrow a spindle nut socket for removing the large nut securing the hub to the drive axle. Use a tie-rod-end puller for separating the hub from the shaft and CV joint. The drive shaft will be free for removal after using both these tools.

Considerations

Hold the hub against the shaft with a large screwdriver while using the spindle nut socket. The screwdriver prevents the hub from spinning while loosening the tight nut.
