The oil in the Murray 3.5-horsepower push mower should be changed every 100 hours or at the beginning of every season prior to use. The mower takes about a half quart of 30W automotive oil. Care must be taken not to overfill the engine, or hydraulic lock will occur. The mower must be set on something to get it high enough to place a plastic container to capture the oil from under the mower, which needs to be raised 8 to 12 inches. Changing the oil is a simple job.

Instructions

    1

Pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. Raise the lawn mower up by setting the wheels on cinder blocks or anything else on which it can safely rest. Locate the drain plug under the deck on the bottom of the engine. It may be necessary to strip away any dried grass to expose the drain. Remove the drain plug using a socket. Allow the oil to drain completely for 5 minutes. Re-install the drain plug and tighten it firmly.

    2

Lower the mower to the ground. Remove the oil cap, which also contains the dipstick. Pour a little oil at a time in the filler tube until it approaches a half quart. Check the level by inserting the dipstick and screwing the cap down, then removing it to check the dipstick.

    3

Fill the engine until it reaches the full mark on the dipstick. This will be close to a half quart. Do not overfill the engine. Install the spark plug cable on the spark plug.
