Both three- and four-wheel all terrain vehicles (ATVs) are enjoyed by off-road enthusiasts each year. All terrain vehicles come equipped with their own gauges, like gas gauges and tachometers. However, the owner of the vehicle may wish to upgrade or add an aftermarket speedometer. This is common especially among those ATV owners who are members in racing leagues. Aftermarket racing gauges are available at motorcycle parts stores. Installing an aftermarket speedometer will take approximately 15 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Locate the ATV's battery. The location may vary with different ATVs but batteries are typically installed under the ATV seat. Slip the socket set over the ATV's negative battery cable nut. Turn the nut to the left until it is loose and then lift the cable off the battery terminal. The battery cable is removed as a precaution to prevent electrical shortages while working on the speedometer. It is not part of the speedometer or the speedometer cable.

    2

Use a nut driver to remove the cable nut attaching the speedometer cable to the back of the old speedometer.

    3

Locate a spot on the handlebars to mount the new speedometer. Slip the mounting bracket of the new speedometer on the handlebar and tighten the bracket screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Connect the speedometer cable to the back of the new speedometer with the nut driver.

    5

Re-attach the ATV's disconnected battery cable to the negative post on the battery. Slip the socket set over the battery cable's retaining nut and turn the socket to the right to tighten the bolt.
