A transbrake is a valve in the transmission valve body that places the transmission in reverse and forward gears simultaneously. This places less stress on the other components of the transmission. Installing a C-4 transbrake on your vehicle is a very difficult and complex process that can take quite a while to complete, but it is fairly straightforward. If you are unsure how to drain the transmission of your vehicle this task may be too difficult for you to approach and you should consider having a professional install your transbrake.

Instructions

    1

Raise your vehicle using a jack and support your vehicle's front end with jack stands. Drain the transmission of your vehicle. If you are unsure of how to do this, consult your vehicle's repair manual. The general process of draining a transmission consists of removing the oil-pan bolts and removing the transmission's components to drain it.

    2

Use a socket wrench to remove the valve body bolts. Pull the valve body down to remove it.

    3

Remove the modulator valve, the pin and the vaccum modulator valve from the transbrake packaging. Force the jumper wire from the case to the modulator valve's terminal. Install it on to the black wiring connector. Attach the pin to the vaccum modulator valve and feed it through the slot in the case.

    4

Place the selector lever of the transbrake into the manual valve. Place the transbrake onto the transmission and use a torque wrench to tighten the transbrake bolts to 100 in./lbs. Pull off the excess material of the gasket from the mounting pan area of the case. Hook up the solenoid wire on the transmission to the valve body wiring connector.

    5

Secure the pan bolts by using a torque wrench to tighten them to 12 ft./lbs. Adjust the front band of the transbrake with a socket wrench, tightening it to 120 in./lbs. Check the shifter adjustment by shifting the arm on the transmission and making sure it doesn't travel past the final detent.

    6

Shift through all of the gears and gear positions. Test the transbrake. If it works, lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.
