The 2008 Toyota RAV4 has multiple filters to remove contaminants from the engine oil, cabin air, fuel, engine air and transmission. The cabin filter traps dust, dirt and pollen, preventing it from blowing into the passenger compartment. Just like the engine filters, the cabin air filter requires periodic replacement. Located behind the glove box, the filter is one of the easier ones to access on the RAV4. Toyota suggests replacing the cabin filter every 30,000 miles, but due to the ease of access, more frequent inspections are a good idea in high dust or pollen regions.

Instructions

    1

Open the RAV4's glove box. Push inward on the left side of the glove box while pulling outward to free the left glove box retaining stud from the dashboard stop. Push inward on the right side of the glove box while pulling outward to free the right retaining stud.

    2

Pull the catch arm off the right side of the glove box. Lower the RAV4's glove box fully to expose the cabin air filter compartment.

    3

Push the retaining tab on the left side of the cabin filter door to release the door. Pull the door away from the compartment to expose the cabin filter.

    4

Slide the old cabin filter out of the cabin filter compartment and discard it. Slide the RAV4's new cabin filter into the compartment, with the airflow arrows aimed upward.

    5

Put the cabin filter door back into position and close it to lock the retaining tab in place. Lift the RAV4's glove box back into place.

    6

Lift the retaining arm up and slide it onto the retaining arm stud. Reinstall the catch arm onto the side of the glove box. Close the glove box.
