The 1994 Chevrolet Camaro was equipped with either a 3.4-liter V-6 or 5.7-liter V-8 engine. Both engines use sequential electronic fuel injection systems, with individual fuel injectors mounted in the intake manifold. Both engines use a canister-type fuel filter mounted on the chassis at the rear of the vehicle. Very few tools are needed to change the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
Raise It Up
A jack, wheel chocks and jack stands are needed to give you access to the filter because you will have to lift the rear of the Camaro to access the fuel filter.
Relieve Fuel Pressure
You will need to relieve the fuel pressure before you can work on the fuel system. All you need is a pair of safety glasses, to prevent any fuel spray from getting in your eyes, a flat-head screwdriver to push the pin -- or Schrader valve -- in the center of the fuel port and shop rags to catch any fuel spray that comes out of the port.
Removing the Fuel Filter
To remove the fuel filter, you will need more shop rags to catch and wipe up any fuel that spills when you disconnect the lines, carburetor cleaner or compressed air to blow out dirt and debris from the rear fuel line fitting, a wrench set and a flare nut wrench to disconnect the front metal fuel line and needle-nosed pliers to remove the filter bracket from the subframe.
Install a New Filter
To install a new filter, you will use the same tools that you used to remove it, with the addition of a couple of drops of motor oil on the fuel filter where you push on the plastic fuel line connector. A clogged fuel filter can inhibit performance by restricting the flow of fuel to the fuel injectors.
