Your 2004 Dodge Intrepid came with a 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. The ignition system on your 2.7-liter does not have a distributor so all spark timing is controlled by the PCM based on information received from the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. The crankshaft position sensor is a hall effect sensor with a permanent magnet. When the teeth of the crankshaft pass by the sensor the PCM detects changes in the magnetic field. The crankshaft position sensor is located on the rear of the engine block just above the oil filter.

Instructions

    1

Park the intrepid on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands under the front sub-frame rails. Lower the Intrepid until it sits securely on the jack stands.

    2

Position yourself under the vehicle in view of the oil filter. Examine the engine block directly above the filter to find the crankshaft position sensor secured into the block with a single bolt. Squeeze the locking tab and remove the harness from the sensor. Remove the crank position sensor bolt with a socket and ratchet.

    3

Grab the base of the sensor firmly with by hand and pull it out of the engine block with a slight twisting motion; do not attempt to pry the sensor or it may break inside the block. Clean the sensor mating surface on the engine block with a wire brush.

    4

Install a new o-ring onto the new crankshaft position sensor, if not already installed. Align the mounting hole on the new sensor with the mounting hole in the engine block and slide the sensor into place. Install the mounting bolt and tighten to 106 inch-pounds with an inch-pounds torque wrench.

    5

Connect the engine wiring harness to the crank position sensor, it will click when properly installed. Lift the front of the Intrepid off of the jack stands and remove the jack stands. Lower the intrepid to the ground.
