Wheel bearings play an important role by helping wheels spin. To operate properly, these bearings require lubrication with grease. Covering the bearings with grease also helps them last longer and prevents them from locking up. Lubricating your own bearings is not difficult. Your biggest concern when lubricating your bearings is to clean up afterward, as working with the grease can be quite a messy experience.
Instructions
- 1
Put on latex gloves and old clothes to prevent grease from getting on your skin. Spread newspaper around your work area.
2Remove the bearings from the wheel. Scrub them with an old rag and solvent to remove any old grease. Let the bearings air dry.
3Put some lubricant grease in the palm of your hand. Take the dried bearing in your hand and work the grease onto it. Turn the bearing in a circle in your hand, ensuring the grease is uniformly spread over it.
4Grease the bearing in such a way that the lubricant gets inside and outside. Some old grease will be forced out, which will be darker in color.
5Apply some grease to the wheel before you replace the bearing. Remove gloves and dispose of the newspaper.
