How to Remove the Rear Rotors on a Jeep Liberty

The front brakes do the bulk of the stopping on a Jeep Liberty, but the rear brakes share the load as well. The rear brakes also are the source of the parking brake, which keeps the car steady when parked. Brakes need replacing after time, and when they do, you should replace the rotors and the pads to keep things functioning well.

Instructions

    1

Use the jack to lift the rear of the vehicle up in the air, and set the SUV on the jack stands. Before you take off the rear tires, make sure the vehicle is solidly on the stands. Then remove the rear wheels, using the tire iron.

    2

Use the 3/8-inch ratchet to unbolt the brake caliper from the rear suspension. Lift it off the rotor, and support it by the suspension itself or with a spare jack stand. Do not allow the caliper to dangle by the brake line, as this could damage the line.

    3

Look for the rotor's retaining clips on the rotor lugs. They are circular tabs used to hold the rotors in place during vehicle assembly, and they are not necessary for reassembly. Remove these tabs--if they are present--using the needle-nose pliers. Slide the rotor off the hub, using your hands.

    4

Repeat this process for the other rear wheel.
