In comparison to some models on the road the road today, the headlight bulbs in your 2004 Mercury Sable are relatively easy to replace, meaning you don't have to tear apart most of your vehicle's front end to get at them. If one bulb is out, the other will most likely need replaced in the very near future, so it's a good idea to change both headlight bulbs at the same time.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and remove the hex-head bolt that secures the inbound portion of the headlight assembly, using a socket, extension and ratchet. Pull up and remove the two plastic, L-shaped retainers that secure the headlight assembly. If necessary, use a flat-head screwdriver to disengage the retainers.

    2

Pull the headlight assembly forward from the vehicle to gain access to the rear. Turn the bell-shaped dust cover counterclockwise, then separate it from the assembly to expose the electrical connector; disengage the locking tab and disconnect the connector from the bulb socket. Unscrew the locking ring that secures the bulb socket to the assembly, counterclockwise. Pull the bulb from the assembly; you may need to wiggle it a bit while pulling.

    3

Carefully remove the new bulb from the packaging. Do not touch the glass surface with your bare fingers, as the oils from your skin can shorten the life of the bulb. If needed, use a clean, lint-free rag to handle the bulb, and only handle the bulb by its base. Insert the new bulb into the assembly, then replace the locking ring. Reconnect the electrical connector and secure the dust cover.

    4

Fit and align the headlight assembly to the vehicle. Secure the headlight assembly with the plastic retainers and single hex-head bolt to complete the bulb replacement process.
