A steering stabilizer on the 2003 F-150 makes a huge difference in steering shock input when running larger than normal tires and running over very rough terrain. This steering shock is called bump steer. When the front wheels encounter rough terrain the wheel will turn in either direction with considerable force. The stabilizer nullifies this effect. It is also possible to install dual stabilizers if necessary.

Instructions

    1

Straighten the front wheels. Raise the truck using the floor jack and place jack stands under the frame. Lower the truck so it rests on the stands.

    2

Remove the parts from the stabilizer kit. Find the frame mounting bracket and bolts. Install this bracket on the crossmember where it is attached beneath the lower control arm. Notice that there is a hole and a slot right below the control arm. Install the bracket with the upright hole facing the opposite side of the truck and tighten the bolts.

    3

Install the centerlink attachment plate with the mounting plate facing the opposite mounting plate. Install the two U-bolts and tighten them loosely so they can move to adjust.

    4

Turn the stabilizer shaft counterclockwise and allow the stabilizer to extend. Install a dish washer face up on the stabilizer base, followed by a rubber bushing. Pass the base through the frame-mounting bracket and install another rubber bushing on the opposite side of the bracket followed by another dish washer and a nut. Tighten the nut until the two rubber bushings are compressed.

    5

Turn the wheels all the way to the right. Install a washer and a bushing on the shaft. Pass the shaft through the hole in the bracket mounted on the centerlink and install another bushing and the nut. Push the stabilizer shaft in a half-inch and tighten down on the four U-bolts to hold the shaft in place on the center link. Tighten the nut on the stabilizer shaft to compress the bushings.
