The Chevrolet Venture is equipped with rack and pinion steering a type of steering that is far superior to its predecessor, the steering gearbox. The weakest point on a Venture, or the most vulnerable to wear, is the inner tie rod and the outer tie rod end. These are the direct link to the steering knuckle used for directional control. Over time the tie rods wear out resulting in freeplay in the steering. This makes it difficult to keep a straight tract without constant correction. It is not necessary to replace tie rods in pairs. Just replace the side that is worn.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel one complete turn on the side with the worn tie rod using the lug wrench. Raise the front of the Venture and place jack stands under the sub-frame. Lower it so it rests on the stands. Resume the removal of the lug nuts and the wheel.
2Remove the cotter pin located in the tie rod end stud using the wire cutters. Loosen the jam nut against the tie rod end using a wrench. Remove the nut on the tie rod end stud using a wrench.
3Place the tie rod separator tool between the tie rod and the knuckle. With the use of a hammer, drive the tool between the knuckle and tie rod until the tie rod separates from the knuckle.
4Rotate the tie rod end counterclockwise to remove it, counting the number of turns required removing it. The tie rod must be installed the same number of turns to keep the alignment within specifications.
5Thread the new tie rod on the inner tie rod shaft clockwise the same number of turns, and drop the tie rod stud into the hole in the knuckle. Install the nut on the tie rod stud, and tighten it with a wrench until it is hand tight. Install a cotter pin in the end of the stud.
6Run the jam nut against the tie rod end. Tighten it with a wrench to lock the tie rod in place. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Tighten them moderately. Lower the Venture to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts to 110 foot-pounds of torque.
