A vehicle's air-conditioning (AC) air compressor pressurizes refrigerant for cooling the air that enters the car's interior. Many parts, including the clutch bearings, work together in the compressor under high-pressure conditions. Clutch bearings should not be oiled.

Identification

The compressor houses clutch bearings as part of the magnetic field coil assembly. The clutch bearings allow rotation of the compressor, for generation of a magnetic field and pressurization of the refrigerant fluid.

Features

The AC clutch bearings depend on the magnetic field, as well as a spaced air gap, for operation. Any oiling of the bearings can negatively affect the air gap's spacing between the bearings and the compressor assembly. The air gap space should be 0.015 to 0.04 inch.

Considerations

An electrical problem is a common cause of an AC clutch bearing failure. Verify that the compressor wiring is free from damage and that all fuses are intact. Confirm that the refrigerant level is within the manufacturer's specifications. The clutch may disengage if it senses low refrigerant pressure.
