The vehicle speed sensor, also known as the VSS, in a 1995 Honda Odyssey is an integral part of the powertrain management system. This sensor sends data to the engine control module, or ECM, to help the ECM determine how to properly manage the transmission and other related systems. When the VSS fails, a number of vehicle systems such as the speedometer, transmission and ABS may operate erratically. Replacement vehicle speed sensors are available from local auto parts stores and licensed Honda and Acura Dealerships.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Turn off the engine, open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a battery terminal wrench. Allow the engine compartment to cool down for one hour before beginning work.

    2

Locate the VSS on the left side of the engine compartment, on top of the transmission, adjacent the cylinder head. The VSS has a three-wire connector attached to it; the wire colors are yellow, orange, and black.

    3

Depress the locking tab on the VSS connector and remove the connector. Remove the two mounting bolts and remove the VSS using a metric socket and a ratchet. The drive link connector is the small locking pin between the VSS and the transmission; it may be stuck in the VSS when you remove it. If this is the case, remove it from the VSS and reinstall it into the transmission. The drive link connector is a very small part, so be sure not to lose it.

Installation

    4

Install the new VSS on top of the transmission and the drive link connector. Reinstall the VSS retaining bolts and torque them to 97 inch-pounds using a torque wrench.

    5

    Reconnect the sensors electrical connector.

    6

Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a battery terminal wrench. Close the hood and test drive the vehicle to ensure it operates properly.
