How to Change a Thermostat in a 94 4.0L Ranger

Your 1994 4.0L Ranger needs a little tender love and care due to its aging engine. If you've neglected engine maintenance and now your Ranger won't warm up for you it's time to replace that worn out thermostat. The thermostat is spring-loaded and can wear out over time. If this happens the engine will not properly warm up and you will not get any heat inside of the vehicle. Replacing the thermostat will correct this issue.

Instructions

    1

Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing by removing the clamp that squeezes the hose to the housing and then pull the hose off. Hold the hose vertical so the radiator fluid goes back into the radiator and not onto the engine.

    2

Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing onto the intake of the Ranger. Pull the thermostat housing off of the intake. The thermostat is located in the hole that was exposed when the thermostat cover was removed.

    3

Remove the thermostat from the hole in the intake and discard it. Pull the thermostat off of the intake with your hands. It could stick to the intake. If this is the case you may need to scrape the gasket off with a razor blade.

    4

Place a new thermostat gasket into place and then place a new thermostat into the hole in the intake. Make sure the correct end is sticking out of the intake. The top will be marked as the top.

    5

Place the thermostat housing on top of the thermostat gasket and bolt them both to the intake of the Ford Ranger using the old bolts that were previously removed.

    6

Slide the radiator back onto the thermostat housing and reattach the clip that holds the hose onto the thermostat housing.
