The ball joint on a 1993 Honda Accord connects the steering knuckle to the control arm. It is integral to the car's suspension. Over time, friction and pressure wear down the ball joint until it needs repair. A worn or broken ball joint is dangerous; it leads to suspension failure and can cause accidents. Installing a new ball joint requires special tools, but it can be accomplished in a couple of hours.

Instructions

    1

Park the Accord on a flat, level surface and set its parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that is covering the broken ball joint.

    2

Place a jack under the center of the car's frame at the end with the damaged ball joint. Jack up the car and place jack stands under the axles. Remove the lug nuts. Remove the wheel.

    3

Examine the brake assembly for a part that pushes the brake pads against the disk. This is called a caliper. Remove the caliper's bolt with the socket wrench. Remove the caliper.

    4

Grip the cotter pins in the ball joint with the pliers. Pull out the cotter pins.

    5

Place the ball joint press kit around the ball joint. Squeeze the press closed until the ball joint pops free. Remove the castle nut, which has slots on one side, with a socket wrench.

    6

Lift the control arm out of the way. Remove the ball joint.

    7

Place the new ball joint in the socket. Attach the ball joint press kit and tighten it until the ball joint slides into position.

    8

Replace the control arm on the ball joint. Add the castle nut and tighten it with pliers. Install the ball joint's cotter pins.

    9

Replace the caliper. Tighten its retaining nut with the socket wrench.

    10

Place the wheel back on the hub. Put the lug nuts on the wheel lugs. Tighten the lug nuts until the wheel spins.

    11

Remove the jack stands and lower the car. Finish tightening the lug nuts.
