The base model 1999 Toyota Camry CE was a four-door sedan with a 2.2-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. The four other sub-models of the 1999 Camry included the LE, LE V6, XLE and XLE V-6. Replacing the passenger-side front window or door glass involves nearly the same procedure as replacing the driver's-side front door glass. Whether the window is electrically or manually controlled, the door glass is held in place by the window regulator. Replacing the door glass requires first removing the interior door panel.

Instructions

Door Panel Removal and Installation

    1

Open the passenger door of your Camry. Roll the window regulator downward so the window is in the fully open position. If you have electric windows, you will have to insert the ignition key and turn it to the accessories position to lower the window regulator.

    2

Remove the window regulator crank handle, if you have manual windows, by turning it so the end faces straight downward. Shimmy a rag or towel between the crank handle and the door panel, and pull upward to release the crank handle lock. Pull the crank handle free from the door window regulator. If you have electric windows, pry the forward edge of the switch panel out of the door with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the switch panel, then disconnect the electrical connectors by hand.

    3

Remove the center screw to the interior door handle bezel. Remove the upper window garnish from the door frame using your flat-head screwdriver. Remove the mounting screw from the upper front area of the door panel, where the door panel meets the side of the dashboard, using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the one rearward and two lower mounting screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the center door armrest puller handle mounting screw that rests vertically inside the puller handle. Remove the single mounting screw from the bottom forward-facing area of the puller handle armrest.

    4

Insert your flat-head screwdriver between the door panel and door frame, and pry gently outward to release the panel from the clips. Pull the door panel upward and away from the door to remove the panel.

    5

Reverse the removal process to re-install the door panel. Tighten all screws snugly but not to the point that they cause breaking of any of the plastic door panel parts. Install the door window switch or crank handle by hand.

Door Glass Replacement

    6

Peel the water shield material away from the door frame once you have removed the door panel. Keep your hands clear of the inside of the door frame unless you are wearing thick protective gloves. Peel the water shield from the top of the door down to the bottom, but leave the shield on at the bottom.

    7

Locate and remove the two door glass mounting bolts on the window regulator assembly. The bolts are at the bottom of the door glass where it meets the assembly. Remove the bolts with a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, socket and extension. Push the door glass upward with your gloved hand until it protrudes slightly at the top of the door panel area. By hand, completely pull the door glass up and out of the door frame. If the window glass was broken, remove any unbroken glass by hand.

    8

Put gloves on. Vacuum the inside of the door frame with an industrial vacuum and extension hose to remove any shards of glass. Pull large pieces of glass out with your gloved hands, and immediately throw the glass into a trash receptacle. If the door glass was not broken before the replacement, skip this step and proceed directly to step 4.

    9

Install the new door glass downward through the opening at the top of the door frame. Place a gloved hand in the door frame to catch the new glass, and guide it slowly down onto the regulator assembly. Align the two door glass regulator mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 71 inch-pounds using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench, socket and extension.

    10

Install the water shield back onto the door frame. If the water shield is not sticking properly, use a hair dryer to heat the glue on the shield. Press the water shield onto the door frame by hand. Install the door panel back onto the door frame following the instructions for door panel removal and installation.
