In the 1986 model year, Ford Motor Company released two nearly identical cars, the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. In 1996, Ford Motor Company completely redesigned the Taurus and Sable giving them an oval motif. The 1999 Sable -- the final year of the oval design -- came standard with a four-speaker, AM-FM, cassette stereo system. The Sable had an optional six-speaker system available in 1999, as well. Mercury positioned the front door speakers behind the door panels. You must remove the panels to replace the front door speakers.

Instructions

    1

Open the front door and leave it open. Pull on the interior door latch -- the handle you pull to open the door -- and pry the plastic cover from behind it, using a flat-head screwdriver.

    2

Pry the plastic screw cover from inside the door pull handle -- the handle you pull to close the door -- using a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the screw inside the pull handle, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    3

Remove the two screws on the top of the sail panel speaker grille -- the grille covering the speaker in the window frame -- using a Phillips screwdriver, if equipped with six-speaker system. Remove the sail panel speaker grille.

    4

Remove the three door panel-to-door frame screws near the front of the door panel, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    5

Pry the 11 door panel-retaining clips -- four on the bottom, three on the rear, two on the front and two on the top -- away from the door frame, using a trim stick, and pull the door panel away from the frame.

    6

Disconnect the power window and door lock wiring harnesses from the door panel, by pressing the locking button on each harness and pulling the harness from the panel. Set the panel in a secure location to prevent damage.

    7

Remove the four door speaker-retaining bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the speaker from the door and pull the wiring harness from the rear of the speaker.

    8

Plug the wiring harness into the rear of the new speaker and set the speaker inside the door frame. Tighten the four speaker-retaining bolts using a ratchet and socket.

    9

Plug the door lock and power window wiring harnesses into their receptacles on the rear of the door panel, and set the door panel on the frame. Using the palm of your hand, carefully hit around the perimeter of the door panel to engage the door panel-retaining clips into the frame.

    10

Tighten the three front door panel screws and the door pull handle screw, using a Phillips screwdriver. Press the screw cover back in place over the pull handle screw.

    11

Reinstall the sail panel speaker grille, if applicable, and tighten its two screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    12

Pull the inside door latch and press the plastic cover back into place behind it. Listen for this plastic cover to snap into place.

    13

Repeat Steps 1 through 12 for the other door speaker.
