Volvo's history started with a Swedish company that began by making ball bearings back in 1915. In 1924, they decided that it would be a good idea to manufacture cars so they could market their bearings, and in 1927, the first Volvo rolled off the line. Volvo has had many crowning achievements in vehicle safety over the years. Volvo is responsible for the first laminated windshield. The first front and side air bag system was a Volvo achievement as well, making Volvo one of the safest cars on the market. The tailgate struts on a 2004 Volvo expand with the use of a high pressure gas. They are easy to replace.

Open the hatch and place a support in position to hold the hatch up as you remove the support struts. Pry the top of the strut off the ball connector at the hatch using the screwdriver. Place the screwdriver between the ball and the strut-end and pry the strut off.
2Remove the three 12mm bolts in the mounting bracket where the strut meets the body, using a socket and ratchet.
3Snap the bracket off the strut by hand.
4Snap the bracket into the new strut. Reinstall the lower bracket and tighten the three bolts.
5Hold the strut up to the ball connector on the hatch and push the top of the strut onto the ball until it snaps in place. Repeat this process for the opposite side.
