How to Make Antifreeze With a Salt Brine Solution

A car needs to regulate its engine temperature, because if the engine gets too hot, it will begin to break in places. Generally, a fluid is pumped around the engine with the intention of that fluid absorbing the waste heat produced by the engine. In a pinch, this fluid could just be water from a garden hose. The problem with that, however, is that water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celcius), and temperatures go much lower than that in many parts of the world. Instead of just water, creating a salt brine solution will reduce the freezing temperature of water to -6 degrees Fahrenheit (-21.1 degrees Celsius).

Instructions

Make the Brine Solution

    1

Warm the water on the stove top in 6-quart pot until the water is warmer than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.6 degrees Celsius).

    2

Add salt to the water and stir until the salt is dissolved.

    3

Move the water from the pot to a bucket and pour it into the car radiator.
