The 2000 Audi A4 base sedan came with a 1.8-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The mass air flow sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine, so that the computer can adjust the amount of fuel supplied for efficient combustion. Your MAF sensor is mounted to the air filter housing between the air intake tube and air and air filter cover. A faulty MAF sensor will most likely cause a lean or rich -- not enough fuel or too much fuel -- combustion scenario, because the computer is receiving the wrong signal or no signal at all.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut off the engine and set the parking brake. Lift the hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Allow the engine to cool completely before continuing.
2Loosen the clamps for the air intake tube at the MAF sensor and the throttle body with a screwdriver. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body and MAF sensor, and then place it aside. Squeeze the locking tab for the MAF sensor connector and disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor.
3Remove the bolts that secure the MAF sensor to the air filter housing with a socket and ratchet. Remove the MAF sensor from the air filter housing.
Installation
- 4
Clean the MAF sensor mating surface on the air filter housing with a soft wire brush, if necessary. Place the new gasket onto the mating surface of the MAF sensor and hold the MAF sensor to the air filter housing.
5Install the MAF sensor mounting bolts and tighten to 53 inch-pounds with an inch-pounds torque wrench. Place a small amount of dielectric grease into the harness connection on the MAF sensor. Plug the wiring harness into the MAF sensor and pull on the plastic connector slightly to ensure its properly connected.
6Set the air intake tube into place on the throttle body and new MAF sensor. Tighten the air intake clamps with a screwdriver. Shut the vehicle hood. Clear any associated trouble codes.
