In 1999, Toyota offered Camry buyers the choice of a 2.2-liter, dual overhead cam four-cylinder or a 3.0-liter dual overhead cam V-6 engine. Each engine requires the proper mixture of air and fuel to ignite in the combustion chamber. An air filter, housed in the air filter assembly, blocks debris and small particulates from reaching the combustion chamber and fouling the engine. The air filter requires periodic inspection and replacement, just as the oil and fuel filters do. However, unlike the other filters, there is no set time or mileage interval for the air filter replacement; be sure to inspect the air filter at every oil change.

Instructions

    1

Shut the Camry's engine off and open the hood. Locate the air filter assembly on the left side of the engine well.

    2

Release the air filter lid retaining clasps. Compress the accordion hose that connects the lid to the mass air flow sensor and pull the lid off the air filter assembly.

    3

Pull the air filter out of the air filter assembly. Hold the filter up to a light source and note if you can see light passing through the filter. If light does not pass through the filter, discard it.

    4

Remove any debris from inside the air filter assembly, by hand. Insert the air filter into the air filter assembly and make sure that it seats properly. Lower the air filter lid into the air filter assembly.

    5

Snap the air filter retaining clasps back in place to secure the air filter lid.
