The blower motor resistor for the 2000 Mercury Sable works with the fan speed selector switch to control the speed of the blower motor. If the blower motor resistor fails, one or several fan speed positions will become unavailable. Finding and replacing the defective resistor unit will restore full functionality to the blower motor and promote a more comfortable atmosphere inside the vehicle.

Instructions

Locate Resistor

    1

Turn off the vehicle and place the transmission in the P position.

    2

Open the front passenger side door and move the passenger seat back to provide more working space.

    3

Examine the underside of the dash, directly below the glove compartment. Locate the black plastic cover below the glove compartment. Separate the upper portion of the plastic cover from the underside of the dash using your hands; the upper portion of the cover is secured to the dash using two round-shaped plastic pushpins.

    4

Open the glove compartment and remove the contents. Examine the back area of the glove compartment and locate the side retainers on each side.

    5

Push the side retainers toward the middle of the glove compartment to lower the glove box, exposing the blower motor housing and resistor unit. The resistor unit is to the left of the ribbed portion of the blower motor and is secured to the housing with two hex-head screws.

Removal

    6

Reach through the glove compartment opening and disconnect the wire harness connection from the blower motor resistor. Take note that you must squeeze the locking tab on the side of the connector to perform the disconnection procedure.

    7

Reach through the underside opening of the dashboard and remove the two screws that secure the resistor unit to the blower motor housing using an socket, extension and ratchet.

    8

Slide the resistor unit from the blower motor housing to complete the removal procedure.

Installation

    9

Slide the replacement resistor unit into the blower motor housing, with the offset mounting screw holes pointed away from the blower motor.

    10

Secure the resistor unit to the blower motor housing with the original screws using the socket, extension and ratchet.

    11

Connect the wire harness connector to the resistor unit.

    12

Push in the side retainers for the glove compartment and close the compartment.

    13

Reposition the black plastic panel for the underside of the dash. Push the round-shaped pins into the locking clip provisions on the underside of the dashboard to secure the panel.
