The Pontiac Grand Am series had two separate runs during the 1970s: from 1973 through 1975 and from 1978 through 1980. The model reappeared in 1985, when it replaced the Pontiac Pheonix. The oil-sending unit on a 1997 Grand Am is located directly above the oil filter. The purpose of the sending unit is to provide an active reading of the engine oil pressure for display on a gauge on the dash. It also serves as a warning device if the oil pressure drops below safe limits. It is designed to turn the red "low oil pressure" warning light on.

Instructions

    1

Raise the front of the car using the floor jack and place the jack stands under the sub-frame. Lower the car so that it rests on the stands.

    2

Pull the electrical connector out of the oil-sending unit, located above the oil filter. Remove the oil-sending unit by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench.

    3

Install the new sending unit by turning it clockwise as far as it will go, by hand. Tighten it with the wrench until it is snug. Do not over tighten it, or it will either warp or the threads will break off in the block, rendering it useless.

    4

Plug the electrical connector into the sensor. Raise the car and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground.
