Mazda recommends inspecting the brake pads in your 2001 Mazda 626 every 30,000 miles or whenever you suspect trouble. Replacing the pads is no different than in most vehicles, except the 2001 Mazda 626 requires a special tool to compress the piston into the caliper--the piston head is made of a material that can be damaged by a C-clamp. Expect to spend about 15 minutes on each wheel.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts. Raise and support the vehicle. The lift point is directly behind the front wheel and marked by a pair of ridges. Remove the front wheel.

    2

Remove the lower bolt from the caliper. Pivot the caliper upwards around the top bolt and suspend it with a piece of wire. Remove the brake pads. They are held in place by a pair of springs.

    3

Install the replacement pads, securing with the springs. Press the piston into the caliper using piston compressor tool 49-0221-600C or equivalent. Pivot the caliper into place and install the bolt. Torque to 22 to 29 ft-lbs.

    4

Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Lower the car and finish tightening. Repeat on the other side.
