How to Change the Windshield in an Austin Healey

Ensuring full visibility from your windshield is important when you take your Austin Healey on the road. With all classic cars, you must make sure that the vehicle is properly maintained on a regular basis to ensure best performance. If your windshield becomes damaged in any way, you should change it as soon as possible.

Instructions

    1

Place a dust cloth over the hood of your Healey. This will help protect the paint when you remove and install the windshield.

    2

Locate the two mounting screws which are attached to the rear-view wing mirror. Remove one of the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the wing mirror off of its base. Repeat the process on the second wing mirror. This will give you best access to the windshield.

    3

Cut away the rubber trim from around the edges of the windshield with a sharp blade. Discard the trim correctly in the trash. Enter the vehicle and press the windshield out of the frame. Have someone outside the vehicle help take the weight of the windshield.

    4

Apply a layer of sealant around the edges of the new windshield. Attach a new rubber gasket to the bottom of the windshield. Make sure that the heavy part of the gasket is on the inside of the windshield and that the slit is on the outside. Tie a nylon cord around the outer groove of the windshield.

    5

Lift the windshield in to place on the Healey's frame. Press the windshield against the frame for a few minutes to allow the seal to set in place. Enter the vehicle and pull the nylon cord across the dash. This will allow the lower rubber lip to set in place. Reattach the wing mirrors by attaching the screw back onto its base. Thoroughly clean the windshield and the dash to help prevent any dust or debris from getting into the vents or electrical components.
