The wheel hub on a Honda Accord is the main component to which the wheels are secured. The wheel hub also houses the wheel bearings and the wheel seal. One of the main reasons for changing a wheel hub is cracks or damage to the wheel hub itself. Locked-up wheel bearings and over-tightening of the spindle nut can cause damage to the wheel hub. The wheel hub comes off the spindle as a whole assembly and can be changed in about one hour.

Instructions

    1

Park the Honda Accord on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Loosen the lug nuts from the wheel that is mounted to the wheel hub in need of replacement with a lug wrench.

    3

Jack the side of the Accord up and place a jack stand under the proper jacking point. Lower the Accord onto the top of the jack stand and remove the jack.

    4

Finish removing the lug nuts from the wheel. Pull the wheel off and place it flat down near the work area. Locate the access hole on the front of the brake caliper, which is mounted over the brake rotor. Slide the tip of a small pry bar through the access hole and pry the inside brake pad against the brake rotor until there is slack between the caliper and the rotor. Remove the pry bar.

    5

Loosen and remove the two caliper mounting bolts on the back of the brake caliper with a ratchet and a socket. Pull the brake caliper off the brake rotor and hang the caliper to one of the steering components behind the wheel hub with a bungee cord.

    6

Pull the brake rotor straight off the wheel studs and place it on the ground. Locate the wheel hub mounting bolts on the backside of the spindle backing plate. Spray a generous amount of penetrating oil onto the mounting bolts and let it absorb for about 10 minutes.

    7

Loosen all of the wheel hub mounting bolts with a breaker bar and a socket. Place a block of wood under the front of the wheel hub to hold it in place. Finish removing the mounting bolts with a ratchet and a socket. Pull the wheel hub straight off the spindle and place it on the ground.

    8

Slide the new wheel hub over the spindle and position it against the backing plate. Line up the holes on the new hub with the mounting holes on the rear of the backing plate. Place the block of wood under the new hub for support.

    9

Screw the mounting bolts back into the rear of the backing plate and the wheel hub. Tighten all of the mounting bolts until they are very tight, using the ratchet and socket. Re-install the brake rotor, brake caliper and the wheel. Screw the lug nuts on tightly.

    10

Jack the Honda Accord up and remove the jack stand. Lower the Accord to the ground and finish tightening the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
