How to Remove a Clutch From a Dirt Bike

The clutch is one of the most commonly overlooked parts on a dirt bike and can cause various problems if not maintained properly. The clutch on a dirt bike allows you to change gears on the bike, enabling a smooth, consistent change of speed on the machine. Maintaining the clutch is key to owning a reliable dirt bike, especially if you use the bike often and there is a lot of wear and tear on the clutch. Maintenance will require you to remove the clutch in order to replace parts or clean the component.

Instructions

    1

Remove the clutch cover from the dirt bike. Select a wrench to fit over the bolts that hold the clutch cover in place, and turn the bolts to the left until they are loose. Unscrew the remaining couple of threads with your hands until you can easily lift off the bolts and clutch cover.

    2

Inspect the O-ring around the clutch cover to ensure it is not broken if you plan to reinstall the cover with a new clutch. Set the clutch cover in a safe place for later use.

    3

Remove the five bolts out of the pressure plate under the clutch cover. Select a wrench to fit over the bolts that hold the pressure plate in place, and turn the bolts to the left until they are loose. Set the bolts in a safe location as you remove them and place the pressure plate in a safe spot as well.

    4

Lift off the clutch basket. This piece will come off easily with a gentle tug of the hand. Lifting out the clutch basket also removes the clutch assembly, which is housed inside the basket.
